About Ayurveda

Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurvedic Medicine originated in ancient India. The history of its origins is as mystical as its land of genesis. According to mythology, Ayurvedic Medicine was gifted to humanity by the Hindu God of Creation, Lord Brahma, when an epidemic engulfed the earth.

What is Ayurveda?

Derived from the Sanskrit words Ayuh (life or vitality) and Vedah (knowledge), Ayurveda is a science that impacts all realms of human existence. The holistic practice of integrating the mind, body and spirit—and treating illness through diet.

Principles of Ayurveda

The Charaka Samhita offers a comprehensive definition for Ayurveda-“Ayurveda is that knowledge system that deals with what is good, what is bad, what is happiness, what is sorrow, what is life, what is suitable for life, and what is unsuitable for life ” 2. Aayu (Life).

Concept of Disease

Diseases are caused by a disturbance of the dosha-dhaatu-mala triad. The nature of the disease and the most suitable treatment for it, are determined based on the understanding of the state of the dosha.

Ayurveda, a Holistic Approach to Health

Ayurveda explains health as a state when all three components of life, the body, mind and soul, are in a normal state. Susruta gives the best definition of a healthy state, i.e. when the dosha are in a state of balance, the agni or digestive fire is working properly, the dhaatu are participating properly in the nutritive process initiated by the agni, and themala or impurities are eliminated naturally from the body.
